Recently I installed the latest windows 10 insider build and I found a very mysterious thing. It happens to all of windows user if you do not install Windows without formatting the hard drive or upgrade to a new insider build. Windows creates a windows.old folder in the hard drive where the operating system is currently installed (typically the C: drive).
Why the Windows.old file is created?
This copy is a safeguard mechanism in case something goes wrong during the installation process. If something bad happens, the operating system can use the backup copy to roll back any change automatically. Or in the case of Windows 10, you also get the option to go back to your previous version of the operating system within the first month if you don’t like it.
Trust me, if everything is working fine, then you can delete the windows.old folder that takes a lots of storage. For me it took for than 27GB. Can you believe? 27GB of my storage is blocked for nothing. You cannot delete the files as the other folder of windows. So, what will you do?
Keep in mind that it’s safe to delete the Windows.old folder and related files from your computer. However, you should also consider that after removing these files, you will no longer be able to roll back to the previous version of Windows 10 using the recovery options. After deleting the Windows.old folder, the only way to go back is by performing a clean installation of the operating system.
How to delete Window.old files?
- Go to File Explorer.
- Go to Properties of C:\
- Click the Disk Cleanup.
- Click the Clean up system.
- Select the Previous Windows Installation(s)option to delete the old folder. Here you can also choose to delete other installation related files, including Windows upgrade log files and Temporary Windows installation files, which can take up several gigabytes of storage as well. This will take a few minutes.
- Click Ok. You will have a pop-up like following. Click on Delete Files. Windows will give a warning which I told before.
- This will take a few minutes and you will have your storage cleaned up.
See, how many storage has cleaned up. Enjoy! 🙂
